How to fill an elevator in the off-season: five proven ways

The harvest has been shipped out, but free tonnes remain. Staff, security, electricity and taxes keep costing money every day, whether the site is full or empty. Here is where to look for clients until spring.

1. Farms without their own storage

Many farms hold grain until spring prices and look for storage close to their fields. They care about a clear tariff, the storage period and the ability to ship a lot at the right moment. Put all of this in one short commercial offer.

2. Traders and exporters

They build up lots for rail shipment, including to China. From a site they need space, lot formation and loading into wagons. If you have a rail siding, it is your main advantage.

3. Processors

Flour mills, compound feed plants and oilseed processors need grain conditioning and drying to a specific quality. This kind of client stays for the long term and brings repeat lots.

4. Transshipment "truck → wagon"

Those without their own siding need a site where grain is moved from trucks into wagons. If you have a siding and there are farms nearby without one, this service finds clients quickly.

5. Different crops in different windows

Cereals, pulses and oilseeds are harvested and sold at different times. If you see your site as more than a place to store wheat, the idle periods get filled.

What decides the client's choice

The client picks whoever is first to make a clear offer: with a tariff, timing, quality and delivery already calculated. A deal is more often won by the one who replied faster and with numbers than by the one with the lower price.
